Question about a 1998 GS300 with navigation

this may be a really dumb questions but i was wondering if you can put an aftermarket head unit into the 1998 GS300 and have it all be compatible with the navigation unit and the touch screen....just dont know if they both have to be hooked up in order for it to work...anyway i want to know because i might be buying my dads and i want to know if i can change that before i make any decision

It is doubtful that the audio screen function of the OEM navigation unit will be compatible with the aftermarket head unit. However, the navigation will still work and speak to the user as the navigation and head unit are connected to the speakers independently.

In short, the user will lose all touch screen functions dealing with only the audio sections. Navigation will be left unaffected.

any idea how much of a pain in the ass it is to get an aftermarket head unit in there.....and how it looks once you do get it in there....thanks for all your help guys

To date i have not seen anyone with the OEM navigation and an aftermarket headunit so i cannot tell you how it looks. The wiring should be a breeze, however, finding a suitable installation kit will be difficult. That was how it was for me when i was contemplating the idea.

Now, i see no reason to change the head unit. Unless you are looking for more features such as MP3 player, sound quality will not be improved by any significant measure by replacing the head unit. If you plan on adding DVD/MP3 compatibility in the future, a better route would be to purchase a DVD-Nav converter that is on sale here @ Lextasy.com. This unit will plug into the DVD player and run it up to the OEM navigation screen.

If you are looking to maximize sound quality, an equalizer with new speakers and tweeters will do the job.
