I just bought a clean 2002 is300 and the former owner says he always used 91 octaine gas. With gas so high I would like to save money if possible.

Any of you using lower octaine gas?

What harm will it cause?

you can use lower octane gas, but I highly suggest that you don't because it its very bad for the engine. The is300's engines' need a higher octane level because it is designed for performance and if you use a lower octane level you are ruining the engine and shortening the engine life. So basically don't use lower octane levels, use the highest you can get. In the manual it tells you to use 91 octane and higher. It sucks because its so expensive but hey you gotta do it.

Follow the manual it tells you to use 91 octane. the only time i would recommend to use something less, by less i mean plus(89) is if you doing a long trip and and you know you'll burn out the gas.

but stick to super(91) and your car will be happy. and so will you

You really are not required to use the 91 Octane gasoline. Using the lower octane gasoline will not harm your engine. It may lower the MPGs but negligible at most.

However carbon buildup would probably be your worst enemy. I noticed carbon buildup slightly faster then usual. All I do is take a couple bottles of Sea Foam and clean out the carbon from my engine every year.

He hit it right on the head...using 89 octane won't damage the engine but you will see a drop in your fuel economy. It doesn't seem to run as effiecient. And obviously it doen't run as clean either...thus more build up. Save yourself the time and just use the premium!

I just purchased an LX 470. This car has the same motor as the 2003 4Runner I traded. The preformance is very similar. The MPG is dead on with the 4Runner. My question is IF the engine and drive train are the same in both SUV's why would they require 91 octane in the Lexus when the 4Runner did not require the higher octane?

Its how the computer is programmed.....Ie timing, fuel curve. etc.
