Hi everyone, I have a 98 ES300. Once a technician at Walmart accidentally poured more than enough engine oil, the check engine light came on. He then drained the oil to a correct level but the light has been on for months now. What is the easiest way to shut that light off without taking it to the shop? I've driven the car for miles and miles and I know there's nothing wrong with the engine. I just simply don't wanna spend money for mechanics to just turn it off. I tried disconnecting the battery. It worked for a mere 15 minutes and the light came right back on.

Please, can anyone show me how to reset that dumb light so our car can pass the smog check without having to waste money to "fix" it? Your help will be very mch appreciated.

Tony

To clear a check engine light you can remove the posative battery cable from the battery. Wait for about 2 minutes and touch the cable to a good ground momentarily. Then reconnect cable back up to the battery (you may see a small spark). Job done! Your check engine light should be clear at this time. If the light comes on again after a drive or two there is a problem with the vehicle and you should seek further help. This will work for most vehicles of any brand and may possibly clear presets such as clock time or seat memmory as well. On my '99 ES300 it did not clear any presets. Hope this helps.
