Well, it is called a caliper. You do not have to take it apart to paint it. All that is neccessary to do is to remove the wheels, just mask everything off...

make sure you cover everything well though, caliper paint is one S.O.B to get off....if it even comes off

how long does it take to dry ? kinda of dangerous lifting the car up and with a tire off and still trying to cover the area to paint.

use sandpaper first to ruff everything up so the paint holds well.

not neccessary to remove the brake to paint the caliper, however if you feel so inclined to do so- go for it. You can start by removing the tire/rim and cleaning the caliper thoroughly- make sure it is clean (some kits come with a "brake" cleaner)

Next, cover everything you do not want to paint. You can use whatever does the job ( I used old T-shirts and tied them around the suspension and rotor- and tape + newspaper to get more exact around the caliper/rotor) I also suggest covering your entire car if you are using a spray on application. Make sure everything is covered and ready to paint.

Once the caliper is cleaned and everything is covered, you can prime the caliper. Most brake caliper paint kits come with a primer but if you don't have one, you can get a metal primer from your local auto store (make sure it is a metal primer)

***Make sure you are painting in temperatures the paint/primer specifies!!! As well as temperature, humidity is also a detrimental factor when painting.... it needs to be relatively dry and within the specified temperature for the paint and primer***
( If you paint when its too cold/hot/humid- the paint does not "stick" and it will oxidize- causing little bubbles)

When the caliper is primed and dried, you are ready to paint. Some paints will vary on time needed between coats, so just follow the paint directions, and apply as many coats as needed. To speed up drying, I used a hairdyer on low keeping it far enough away from the paint not to get it too hot.

If you want to put on a caliper sticker, you have to wait until the paint completely dries before you put it on. Once you have the sticker on, I recommend a clear coat to spray over the caliper/sticker to seal it off and give it a glossy look (you can also get this at a local auto store)

Once everything is dried, remove all the newspaper/tape and look at your work of art
Be careful putting the rim back on, although the paint may feel dry, if you hit it, it may leave an indentation in the paint!
