Strange Dealer Claim About Clearcoat

I just purchased a new 2005 GS300 in black. The dealer tried to get me to take it with a big scratch on it which he said they could "wet sand" out. I balked at this because I did not want the clearcoat ground out of the original paint and he claimed up and down that Lexus does not apply clearcoat to the color black only.

Does this make sense? Why would a car company decide not to clearcoat the most scratch susceptible car color in the universe?

No - All cars are basecoat clearcoat. But if the scratch is not to deep they can wet sand it but they have buff it afterwards
