Upon recent inspection I was told that the brakes had worn to 30%. I told the mechanic to replace the pads before the metal on the pads hits the discs. He suggested that I should consider doing the whole brake service including machining the discs. Suggesting that I'd be back at him very shortly with complaints of squealing and warped discs etc. My feeling is that:

1. the discs aren't warped now.
2. pre-emptive maintenance should avoid the inevitable disc damage saving me money.
3. if the brakes aren't squealing now, why would they with new pads?

Does anyone have any advice to offer as to whether I'm out to lunch on this.

Thanks.

I'd wait till the pads go completely out then get new high performance drilled/slotted rotors and new pads.

I bought the set of Lextasy rotors. They do stop the car much quicker. However, the "feedback" I get in the pedal, gear shift and car are horrible. I would NOT recommend these to Lexus owners. The slash in pricing should have been an indication of the lack of quality. icon_sad.gif

30% pad wear is not enough to warrant getting your pads replaced.
Always watch your brake fluid level it is virtually a direct correlation to how much (front) brake pad wear has elasped. Lexus recommends you turn your rotors everytime you change your brake pads. I have experienced not turning them and turning them upon pad replacement. As long as your brake pedal doesn't vibrate or the car pull to one side when braking I wouldn't lose sleep over turning the rotors.
